There's more at the Oregon Caves than caves!OrWhat to do while Waiting for a Tour"IT'S HOW LONG UNTIL THE NEXT TOUR???" Busy summer days offer visitors the opportunity to explore "aboveground" of Oregon Caves National Monument. If you've got awhile before your tour, consider a hike to the "Big Tree;" step back in time with a stroll through the historic Chateau; discover the Monument's hidden worlds at a Ranger-Lead Program. The Monument abounds with recreational opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.
Ranger-Lead ProgramsWhat creatures thrive in the darkest recesses of the cave? Why are the forests in the Siskiyou so diverse? Why should I care about endemic troglobytes in a karst system? (And what exactly does that mean?) During the summer, Rangers share the varied stories of Oregon Caves' natural and cultural legacy. Programs last approximately 20 to 30 minutes and topics change daily. Check the schedule in the Visitor Center for the current topic offer for the day. Back to TopNature WalksRanger will guide you through some of the shorter hikes and talk to you about the wildlife and plant life along the trail. These walks usually last about 30 minutes Check Ranger Program Schedule during your visit to see if a Nature Walk is being offer that day or phone ahead and find out. Back to TopChateau ToursEven before the designation of Oregon Caves National Monument in 1909, the idea of developing a hotel and resort at the cave entrance was taking form. In 1931, construction began on the majestic Chateau. The design of the building and the use of local materials in a rustic fashion are in keeping with most of the old lodges found in the National Parks and National Forests. Take a guided tour of the Chateau, free of charge, to learn more about the history of the lodge. Check Ranger Program Schedule during your visit to see if a Chateau tour is being offer that day or phone ahead and find out. Back to TopHikingMiles of trails meander through Oregon Caves National Monument and into the Siskiyou National Forest beyond. Three short loop trails, each about one mile, begin near the cave entrance. For a longer adventure, try the 3.3 mile (5.3 km) Big Tree Trail. For detailed information about the different routes refer to Trail Map page. Back to Top |
