Pioneer Activities
Visit Fort Hawkins or some other frontier historic site. Try to imagine what
life was like on the frontier between American pioneers and Native Americans
200 years ago.
Get cooking again! Thanks to European contact, the Creeks had iron pots to cook in.
What difference did this make in their food preparation? Try cooking a stew such as Brunswick Stew
(tomatoes, corn, beans, potatoes, carrots, rabbit, squirrel, or chicken and water) over an
open fire. Again consider how cooking over a fire changes the taste of the food.
Grind your corn. Corn was a very important part of the diet of the Native
Americans in many parts of the country. They in turn introduced it to the
Settlers. But the Creeks and other Native Americans didn't go out and buy
cornmeal, they made it themselves, and you can try to do the same. Get some dry
corn- not fresh. Dry corn is available at feed stores and from nice farmers, or
you can grown your own. then find a flat stone, put your corn on it, take
another stone and grind it up. Simple, but hard work. The ground corn can be used to make cornbread or grits
