Modern Activities

Visit Ocmulgee National Monument or other national or state park preserving a Native American site. Not only do these parks allow you to actually see a site first hand, but most also have items for sale- books, videos, artwork, maps, etc., that can help you gain a better understanding of the people who created the site you are visiting.

Visit a reservation. Not all Native Americans live on reservations, but many do. Find out what Native American life is like today on a reservation. State and Federal reservations have been established in several states acoss the US. Many of the reservations have museums or visitor centers, and activities throughout the year which visitors can enjoy. If you go to a reservation remember, people do live there. Be respectful of their privacy and their property. The Native Americans on the reservations are not museum exhibits, re-enactors, or living history interpreters. Be courteous- do not take photographs of people without their permission. In other words, treat them as you would want to be treated. Also be aware that some reservations are difficult to get to, and do not have lodging facilities for visitors- some don't have any facilities for visitors. Contact the reservation you wish to visit before you go.

Attend a Native American event in your area. There are many such events throughout the year taking place all across the US, on reservations, in national and state parks, at fairgrounds, civic centers and public parks. Native Americans are getting out and sharing their culture with each other and non-Indians alike. These events are fun for the whole family, and educational too.
