Antebellum Activities

Visit a swamp. Swamps, large and small are often thought of as terrible places to be, and they can be dangerous to those who do not know how to live in them. But many swamps have are now protected areas and have educational programs associated with them. For the Seminole, the swamps of Florida were a haven that allowed them to elude capture. By visiting a swamp, you will see the environment the Seminole adapted to, what dangers they had to endure, and if you are fortunate enough to be able to visit the Seminole in Florida, you will learn how they managed to make the swamp their own.

When the Creek were removed to Oklahoma, they were not allowed to take much of their possessions with them. Try to imagine how you would react if you were forced from your home, not allowed to take anything more than the clothes on your back, and force marched to a new and completely different land. Would you be able to adapt and survive? Would you try to make the trip and make the best of a new life in a new land, or would you try to escape and cling to some shred of your former life in the nearly inaccessible wilderness near your former home? What factors would influence your decision?
