Activities

The Ocmulgee National Monument Association, Inc. is the park's independent cooperating association, which was organized shortly after the park was established in 1936.  The Association assists the park's interpretive and educational efforts by funding the annual Calendar of Events, providing books and other library materials, materials for the Discovery Lab, helping to present the annual Ocmulgee Indian Celebration, and many other forms of support.

The Association's income is derived from memberships, donations, grants, and income from their Museum Gift Shop located in the park's Visitor Center.  This unique shop specializes in Southeastern Indian arts and crafts, along with books and other items related to the park's themes.   Association members receive a 20 percent discount on all purchases from the shop.

FRIENDS OF OCMULGEE OLD FIELDS

Shed Construction

Constructing a New Equipment Shed

Activities

"Friends of Ocmulgee Old Fields," an outgrowth of the National Parks and Conservation Association, provides many forms of support.  Beginning in 1996, the "Friends" have annually organized a March for the Park in conjunction with Earthday in April.  This event coincides with other Marches conducted for parks and public lands across the nation.   One of the "Friends" largest projects was securing a grant from Georgia Pacific Corp. to provide materials for a badly needed new maintenance equipment shed.  Visit the Friends of Ocmulgee Old Fields homepage at:

VIP'S (Volunteers in the Park)

Many individuals and organizations provide hundreds of hours of volunteer assistance to Ocmulgee National Monument each year.   They work at the Visitor Center information desk, pick-up litter, trim boundary fence lines, help with special events, make items for the Discovery Lab, write site bulletins, and are involved with a host of other activities.  The park's staff cannot adequately express their gratitude to these dedicated people.

PUT YOUR SUMMERTIME HOURS TO GOOD USE

Volunteer with the National Park Service

Ranger Aid:

Looking for a summer position to build your community service hours? Ocmulgee National Monument needs students interested in recycling, word processing, computer graphics, arts an crafts to assist Rangers for the summer. Assistance is especially needed for the park's Children's Summer Workshops on July 10, 17, 24, and 31. Be prepared to supply two references (teacher, scout leader, minister, club sponsor, etc.).

A commitment of at least one day a week is required of our Ranger Aids. Training will be provided for any task that you will be expected to perform. A letter of reference will be provided to you at the end of the summer.

Volunteering for an agency of the federal government is an excellent job reference for your future. With what you learn this summer, you could go on to work as a Seasonal Ranger in parks all across the country. You could assist the Ranger Division with public relations, workshops, exhibit design, Earthlodge programs, and the annual Ocmulgee Indian Celebration. If your interest is in maintenance or resource management, you can apply for those areas.

Librarian:

Assist in staff research library cataloging and shelving books, maintaining files, and general duties as needed. Computer experience and knowledge of Dewey Decimal System is helpful.

Interpretive Programs:

Assist Rangers with monthly interpretive programs and walks as needed. Programs include Nature Walks, Field Trips to Mounds, Tours, Star Gazing, Bird Watching, Artifact Identification Days, etc. Must be available some evenings and/or weekends.

Bookstore/Gift Shop Attendant:

Assist Rangers and the Ocmulgee National Monument Association in working and/or stocking the Museum/Visitor Center Shop as needed. Contact with visitors and use of cash register may be required. Appropriate dress is necessary. Must be 18 or older.

Ocmulgee Indian Celebration:

Assist Ocmulgee National Monument Association with manning oncession booths and/or assist Rangers in set-up and parking for the three-day event.

Trail Maintenance:

Assist Rangers and maintenance staff in building, repairing and maintaining trails. Requires use of shoves, picks, rakes, etc. Must be able to work in hot, humid conditions. School/college service organizations are encouraged to call for special work days.

Litter Control:

Assist Rangers with litter control in streams and on trails as needed. Requires use of gloves and boots. Must be able to work in hot conditions and walk long distances.

Out-of-Town Volunteers:

Ocmulgee National Monument has a trailer pad with utility hookups available for volunteers who might enjoy living in the park for a portion of the year.
