Overview of Methodology:
This web site is for pair, group and classroom use. We recommend that students
not work alone when using this web site in the classroom.
We emphasize a four-component teaching method:
- This site delivers applied science to students and teachers. This science
is real. When confronted with authentic representations of work in which scientists
are employed, students may be compelled to grow toward careers with real possibilities.
And those who encounter authentic science may be inspired to get outdoors
and discover natural wonders on their own and with their family.
- In the simple act of using this site, discovering and solving the puzzles,
students engage in acts of problem solving. In a primitive form, this problem
solving exhibits the same processes which scientists use in the scientific
method.
- A Backyard Discovery activity is available at the bottom of each
of the ten activity pages. This activity is for students to perform outdoors,
at home or in the classroom. The activity is intended to reinforce their learning
and to get them off the computer.
- Each activity has a Critical Thinking link (red bullet) which gives
teachers ideas for discussions which may lead to higher level reasoning among
students.
