Snags provide important habitat to a variety of forest creatures—from the tiniest insect and thumb-sized bat to large mammals such as bears and bobcats. Although trees may be dead, they may harbor more living things than when they were alive. As a matter of fact, researchers have found that some snags contain more biomass (total weight of living plants and animals) than living trees.
