Riparian Zone
The interface between ecological zones is always special. The zone between river and forest is called the riparian zone by ecologists. Riparian habitats are important places where special plants are found, where insects abound and where animals can take shelter. Bats frequent riparian habitats in the summer in search of insects over water.
Riparian zones are also important buffers for rivers when they flood. Vegetation holds sediments and soil firmly in place and limits what rivers can carry downstream. Limiting sediments from entering the rivers is important for salmon for sediment can bury newly laid eggs and suffocate them.
