Most of the west side lowland landscape is covered by trees of various types. But where trees are not found, a disturbance can always be to blame: flooding, avalanche, windstorm, fire. But if it were not for these disturbances, light-loving species might not otherwise survive. Many species such as salmonberry rely on long hours of sunlight for their berries to ripen.
