Rock Habitat
Where found: High elevations and steep slopes
Although rock jumbles may seem like barren and desolate landscape, life thrives in the cracks and seeps where plants can gather moisture and receive protection from the sun. Most of the outcroppings, talus and scree are covered by life of an unusual sort: lichens and mosses. These special species go dormant when summer sun or winter winds would otherwise steal moisture away. And they photosynthesize only when moisture and warmth is available.
