Ear Length
Researchers measure ear length to determine the species and age of bats. The Townsend's big-eared bat—documented just outside the park boundary—is known to regulate its temperature by folding or unfolding its ears when hibernating and roosting. Blood flows through the ear membrane and can cool or warm the bat's body depending on the ambient air temperature.
