Checking for Reproductive Status
Although it may seem intrusive, researchers check the lactating status of female bats to know whether or not they are nursing young. Bats usually produce only one young per year, so knowing the reproduction rate of a species helps scientist know if further measures need to be taken to provide protection for a species in general.
