Top Predator of the Globe

As the top predator of all of the earth's animal species, humans have a responsibility different from that of any other living thing: we are to be caretakers of the globe. As stewards of the land, we are able to manipulate it in ways that no other creature can, so much so that we can destroy it. Thus, stewardship becomes the vital difference between our methods and those of other living things who cohabit on the land.

Teachers, discuss the concept of predators and how they keep ecosystems healthy. Hold a classroom discussion on our responsibility as top predator of the globe. Consider these questions:

1. How does our responsibility differ from that of other animals?
2. How is our functioning similar to other top predators?
3. How does our ability to reason affect our actions as top predator/caretakers?
4. How are we failing as stewards of the land?
5. How are we succeeding?

An organisms energy is finite. Hunting often requires a large quantity of calories. To conserve energy and to help ensure a successful hunt, predators often pursue individuals/prey that are young, old, weak or infirm. Teachers, discuss the idea that predators keep ecosystems healthy.
