Forest Bird Search
Procedure
You are a researcher performing a point
survey in the Conifer/Deciduous Mix habitat above. Move
your mouse pointer over the image or the bird names above. The pointer
will turn into a hand when over a bird. Lights will also appear
when a bird's song or call has been detected. Click on the lights
or the name. A window will appear with geography questions about
that bird.
Your migratory knowledge will be tested about the bird you detected.
Be sure to study North
American geography before you begin. When you succeed in locating
nine birds and all of the nine birds are filled with yellow above,
click on the final bird and you will be off to your next destination.
Habitat Description
Conifer/Deciduous Mix Forest
When scientists survey for birds, they also must describe the habitat
where they detect birds for future data analysis. Conifer/Deciduous
Mix (illustrated above) is one of the habitat types that scientists
use to describe landscapes at North Cascades National Park. This
habitat contains conifers and deciduous trees. Conifers are cone-bearing
plants such as Douglas-fir, mountain hemlock, Western redcedar and
others. Deciduous trees lose their leaves in the winter and include
a variety of mostly flowering trees: bigleaf maple, red alder and
black cottonwood.
