Niobrara National Scenic River is situated in the heart of the Great Plains. Here in Nebraska, we are fortunate enough to experience the four seasons.
Summers are usually hot with air temperatures averaging 85-90 °F, while Spring can be pleasant with temperatures usually in the upper-60's. Most visitors float the river from mid-June through Labor Day and weekends can be very busy. April through mid-June provides the best water levels, but unsettled weather and cooler temperatures are factors to consider when planning a canoeing trip. Thunderstorms occur quickly, so it's best to plan ahead and listen to local weather forecasts.
Fall is a spectacular time of year to float the river. Autumn colors are brilliant, and temperatures are mild- usually in the mid-60's to lower-70's. Winter floats are possible along certain sections, although the river can ice-up and become impassable. Only experienced and properly equipped boaters should attempt floating the Niobrara in winter.
