SAINT JOSEPH'S MISSION

Saint Joseph's Mission (also called Slickpoo Mission) is a semi-active Roman Catholic church that was built in 1874 in the former community of Slickpoo, Idaho. The church and grounds (about 0.33 acre) are owned by Saint Joseph's Mission Historical Society, a private nonprofit group. The mission is surrounded by neatly maintained shade trees, a lawn, ornamental shrubs, and residences. The scene is an enclave and oasis in an otherwise open, rolling agricultural landscape. The nearby cemetery, an important resource, is not included in the boundaries of Nez Perce National Historical Park. This site exemplifies the renewed missionary activity among the Nez Perce that began in the 1870s and the factionalism among missionary groups in this period.

When he came to Lewiston, Idaho in 1867, Father J.M. Cataldo developed a Jesuit Nez Perce mission that continued long after he founded Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington.

A chapel was built a mile up Mission Creek in 1868, but a permanent location was not established until construction of Saint Joseph's Mission was completed at a more secluded site in 1874.
