The Looking Glass Camp is interpreted at a sign on the north side of the Middle Fork of the Clearwater River off U.S. Highway 12, 3 miles east of Kooskia, Idaho. A small U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service fish hatchery occupies the village site, across the river, where the U.S. Army attacked the Looking Glass Band during the 1877 Nez Perce War. The University of Idaho excavated parts of the site in 1993; the collection is currently stored at the university. The site has been altered by the construction of roads, the fish hatchery, and other modern modifications. Most of the surrounding land is heavily forested, interspersed with occasional residences. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service operates the Kooskia Fish Hatchery and an interpretive trail which leads through part of the original settlement. |
