The Cottonwood Skirmishes Site is interpreted at a
1-acre highway rest stop that is about 2 miles south of Cottonwood,
Idaho, on the east side of U.S. Highway 95. This site consists of state
interpretive signs and a cast concrete marker, a chamber of commerce
orientation sign, and a few picnic tables. The skirmish sites associated
with the Nez Perce War of 1877 are on private lands, mostly in
agricultural use, near the community of Cottonwood.
- The relationships between the sign and events is unclear.
- Some of the wording on the sign is inappropriate.
- There is no map to indicate where the events occurred.
- Interpretation will be improved. Brochures will be created and
special tours will be offered. Cooperative agreements will be developed
to protect sites of important events. If a more appropriate site is
found, interpretation will be moved.
- Sites where events happened will be marked.
- The Park Service will work with the Idaho Transportation
Department and others to upgrade the present location to a full-service
rest area.
- Strategies will be developed to protect features and viewsheds.
