New Bedford Historical Society

The New Bedford Historical Society was organized in October 1996 as a non-profit Massachusetts corporation dedicated to documenting and celebrating the history, legacy and presence of African Americans, Cape Verdeans, Native Americans, West Indians and other people of color in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Goals

  • Establish a museum which will collect, preserve and exhibit information, artifacts and real property of significance to the heritage of local people of color

  • Promote cultural events, festivals and traditions of people of color in collaboration with affiliated institutions, organizations and groups

  • Advance academic research and educational programs espousing the history and presence of people of color in the Greater New Bedford area

  • Generate business opportunities and venues to support the Society's mission

Current Activities

  • Co-sponsor of the Cape Verdean Film Festival

  • Participant in "Partners in the Park" educational initiatives

  • Provide local subject matter expertise for NPS planning process for the park and national Underground Railroad to Freedom project
