This historic route generally follows the old Indian trace, or trail, between Nashville, Tenn., and Natchez, Miss. Of the estimated 443 miles, 423 are completed. Legislation: Emergency Appropriation Act of June 19, 1934. allocated initial construction funds; established as parkway under National Park Service by act of May 18,1938. Ackia Battleground (authorized as a national monument Aug. 27, 1935, and now called Chickasaw Village) and Meriwether Lewis Park (proclaimed as a national monument Feb. 6, 1925, and transferred from War Dept. Aug. 10, 1933) were added to the Natchez Trace Parkway by act of Aug. 10, 1961.
