All of the horses have a great personality most of the time. Some of them may greet you as you walk from the parking lot into the farm.
Fred and Dick are the oldest at 25 years. This makes them very senior horse citizens! You can recognize Fred and Dick by their brown coats. They came from Mt. Pleasant, PA in 1983. Being draft horses, they have pulled wagons and plows many times.
Abe and Aaron are half brothers and are the big solid black horses. At 17 years old, they are senior horse citizens! They lived at the Granite Farm on the Gettysburg National Military Park until 1989.
As you might expect, these four fine fellows, being senior citizens, do very little work. Mostly, they hang around all day. Just like people, they are having what we might call old age problems. Fred and Abe are blind in their right eye, and all four of them are having arthritus problems in their joints. All of that is normal after so many years of pulling plows and wagons.
Molly and May are a very nice mother -- daughter pair. Molly is the mother and is between 22 and 24 years old. May is her daughter and is about 13 or 14 years old. Both have white marks on their faces, and are smaller than Abe and Aaron. Molly and May are Percheron - Morgan crosses, the rest of their body is black. The Percheron breed is a draft (pulling) horse. The Morgan breed is a riding horse. Therefore these horses are half draft and half riding horses! They were at Arlington National Cemetery until March of 1998. While there, they pulled the caisson and canons for funerals. Now they pull a much lighter farm wagon. When they are hitched up, Molly is always on the left side and May is on the right.
