Indian Henry's Hunting Ground via Kautz Creek Trail

Trail Description
Distance, round-trip:11.5 miles
Elevation gain:3000 feet
Hiking time, round-trip:6 to 8 hours
Wilderness camps:None

The trail begins at the Kautz Creek Picnic Area along the road from the Nisqually Entrance to Longmire. The total distance from the trailhead to Indian Henrys is about 5.8 miles. From the trailhead the trail follows along Kautz Creek for about 1 mile before crossing the creek on a log bridge and the enters old growth forest. In another ½ mile the trail begins a series of switchbacks and climbs steeply through forests for another 2 miles before emerging along the south flank of Mt Ararat. The trail soon enters a series of meadows before climbing a final ridge and descending to the Ranger Cabin in the meadows of Indian Henrys. These areas are the home of several bears as well as deer and other animals. This trail is a favorite of winter and early spring backcountry travelers and climbers.

Along the Trail Near the trailhead there is evidence of the Kautz Creek flood of about 50 years ago with boulder fields and many large dead trees still standing. Across Kautz Creek is old growth forest with some small streams. After about 2 and ½ miles a small stream is crossed and the trail then winds along a ridge before entering several small meadows with streams intermittently crossed. Before reaching the large meadows near Mt. Ararat the trail is rather steep and care should be taken. From Mt. Ararat to Indian Henrys, the meadows are generally in full bloom from mid -July through August. Fall colors are impressive generally from mid-September into October.
Trailhead Location The trailhead is located across the road from the Kautz Creek Picnic Area where parking is available. Follow the wood covered walkway for about 100’ and the trail begins on the left side (observe the trailhead signs).
Backpacking Permits are required for all overnight backcountry travel and may be obtained at the Longmire Wilderness Information Center (or the Longmire Museum in the winter). Camp only in designated camp locations and observe wilderness regulations.
