

2001 Battle Commemoration Photos
Monocacy National Battlefield presents a series of living history programs
throughout the year. These programs illustrate the Civil War era, the
Battle of Monocacy Junction and give accounts
of the men and woman whose contributions made Monocacy and the surrounding
area a significant part of our national heritage.
Summer Interpretive Programs
Beginning Saturday, May 29th, special interpretive programs will
be held on weekends at Monocacy National Battlefield. At 11:00 a.m.,
visitors can meet a park ranger at the Worthington Farm for “Caught
in the Center of Conflict…the Worthington Farm.” At 1:30
p.m., a program entitled “Monocacy, the Crucial Battle of Lee’s
Last Northern Invasion” will be presented outside the Gambrill
Mill Visitor Center. Finally, at 3:00 p.m. a “ranger’s choice”
program will begin at the visitor center. This program may lead to other
locations on the battlefield depending upon the topic selected.
On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, park volunteers will present
programs at 1:00 p.m. at the Gambrill Mill Visitor Center. Topics will
be: “Weapons and Ammunition,” “The Election of 1864,”
“Dressing Monocacy’s Wounds,” and “Heroes of
the Old Eighth.”
All programs last approximately 30 minutes and are free. These programs
will run through Labor Day.
Programs are held at Monocacy National Battlefield located on Rt.
355, three miles south of Frederick, Maryland. All programs are FREE!

March 27: Park Clean Up Day
Take pride in your national park by joining park staff to clean up the
battlefield. The park is looking for volunteers to help clean up along
the river on the historic Thomas and Worthington farms. Help us make this
a successful and productive day. To sign up, call the park at 301-662-3515

April 3 & 4: Museum: Museum Discovery Weekend
Battlefield hikes on the historic Worthington and Thomas Farms will be
conducted by interpretive rangers on April 3rd, rain date on April 4th.
Reservations should be made for these hikes. Please call the park at 301-662-3515.
This is the only time this year these specific tours will be offered!
Please wear appropriate clothing for hiking and bring drinking water.
Each tour is approximately one and one half to two hours.
A Civil War camp cooking demonstration will be held on both days by costumed
interpreters near the park visitor center.
May 2: Civil War Adventure for Kids
Kids become a detective for the day while learning about the Battle of
Monocacy and the Civil War. Come find clues on the historic fields of
the battlefield that will lead you to decode a message. This adventure
is geared toward children between the ages of 8 and 13 but all kids are
invited to take part.
June 5: Camp Fire Program
An evening campfire program provides an opportunity to reflect on days
gone by through letters and diaries of those who lived before. Join an
interpretive ranger to hear about the Civil War as experienced by both
soldiers and civilians in this special program.
July 10-11: 140th Anniversary of Battle of Monocacy
Commemoration
Join living history volunteers and staff as we commemorated the "battle
that saved Washington." Costumed interpreters will provide living
history programs and artillery demonstration at the historic Best Farm.
August 7-8: 1862- Signal Corp
Demonstration Spend the day learning how Civil War armies communicated
by using flags. Living history volunteers will be encamped at the Gambrill
Mill Farm at the visitor center for the weekend to demonstrate both the
camp life of civil war soldiers and the purpose of the signal corp during
the war.
