Truck Fire - May 1, 2002

The picture above was from an incident on May
1, 2002. The truck in question was hauling cut cordwood, mostly juniper,
out of the park as part of the fuel reduction program. The truck was operated
by a private contractor that bid on the 300 cords of wood cut during the
2001 season. As the driver was exiting the park with a full load, he noticed
the wood on fire in the back and pulled over. Park personnel had noticed
as well and notified dispatch. 1 structural engine, a water tender and
a wildland engine responded. Fire was contained to the contents of the
truck and a small vegetation fire on the side of the road. The fire was
caused by the heating of the load by the truck's exhaust.
