Date
July 13, 2005

Contacts
Superintendent Frank Hays, 760-878-2932 ext. 11
Chief of Interpretation Alisa Lynch, 760-878-2194 ext. 11

Manzanar National Historic Site invites you to join National Park Service Landscape Architect Kimball Koch and other Manzanar staff to learn about and comment on proposals for management of the Site’s cultural landscape features, such as the historic rock gardens, road network, cemetery, and orchards. The meetings will focus on Manzanar’s draft Cultural Landscape Report which details historic conditions and proposes future stabilization, restoration, and preservation projects at Manzanar.

The National Park Service encourages interested individuals to attend one of three review sessions. Each session will include a 20 minute presentation by Kimball Koch followed by an “open house” opportunity to ask questions and share comments. The first meeting will be held at the Manzanar National Historic Site Interpretive Center, Friday, July 22 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Additional meetings will be held at the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center at 244 South San Pedro Street in Los Angeles, Saturday, July 23, from 10:00 a.m. to noon and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The meetings will be hosted Kimball Koch, Manzanar National Historic Site Superintendent Frank Hays, and Chief of Interpretation Alisa Lynch.

According to Superintendent Hays, “In years past, we reached out to the public to help plan the park’s interpretive center. Now we once again turn to the public to help us plan for the next important management actions at Manzanar. The Site’s cultural landscape preserves an invaluable record of Manzanar’s layers of history. The recommendations outlined in the Cultural Landscape Report will guide park management actions for years to come as we work to stabilize, preserve and, in some cases, restore features that make up Manzanar’s historic record.”

A copy of the Cultural Landscape Report will also be posted on Manzanar’s website at www.nps.gov/manz and written comments may be submitted until August 23, 2005. For more information, please call (760) 878-2194 or (760) 878-2932.
