Independence, CA
Independence has been the county seat of Inyo County since 1866 and the town still has a number of historic buildings including the courthouse and the Winnedumah Hotel. The town covers 4 square miles and is home to nearly 600 people. Services are limited in Independence, but there are two gas stations, one market, one restaurant, one fast food restaurants, and three motels. There are also two parks with picnic facilities.

Lone Pine, CA
Lone Pine was founded in the 1860s to provide services and supplies to local mines such as the Cerro Gordo and later to farmers and ranchers. The town was named for a single pine tree found at the mouth of Lone Pine Canyon, but a flood destroyed the tree before 1900. Currently, Lone Pine has a population of nearly 2,000 people and offers a variety of services for visitors. The town has three gas stations, 11 restaurants, 8 motels, a market, a drugstore, and a one-hour photo shop. Lone Pine also has car rentals, automotive towing and repair, and shuttle services. The Southern Inyo Hospital is located at the north end of Lone Pine on the east side of 395.

Alabama Hills
The Alabama Hills have been the location for many western movies and are a highlight of the Lone Pine Film Festival each fall.

1872 Earthquake Cemetery
