"There must always be a conscious effort on the part of the classroom teacher to promote a better understanding of American ideals and loyalty to American institutions. There must be an over compensation in effort to keep alive a faith and belief in the American way, which will counteact the effects of isolation in an abnormal community, and the negative effect which often results from culture conficlits and old world sympathies of alien parents." -Genevieve W. Carter, Superintendent of Education at Manzanar, 1945

Education Program - We are in the process of field-testing the Manzanar National Historic Site Education Program (several lesson plans are available online). The education program was developed to assist teachers in exploring the vast potential of learning at Manzanar. The intent of the curriculum is to inspire teachers to utilize Manzanar National Historic Site in teaching history, language arts, math, and art while meeting numerous state teaching standards. If you would like more information about the education program, contact us at 760-878-2194 extension 10 or write to Manzanar National Historic Site, P.O. Box 426, Independence, CA 93526.

School Field Trips - School tours are arranged by reservation. Call 760-878-2194 extension 10 to schedule a field trip anytime during the year. There is no charge for the tour or for parking. Ranger-led programs are normally two hours long, however, shorter programs may be arranged upon request.

Self-Guided Tours - The park is open every day from sunrise to sunset. Groups are welcome to design their own programs and utilize the site appropriately. A 3.2 mile auto tour is available.
