"Baptism
of Fire: Soldiers and
Civilians at
the First Battle of Manassas" is a curriculum based classroom
visit to
Manassas National Battlefield Park designed around
Virginia's Standards of Learning for 4th and 5th grades. The program and
its materials can be easily adapted to higher or lower grades as
necessary.
"Baptism of Fire" contains a series of several pre-visit
and post-visit activities or modules designed to enhance a field
trip to Manassas National Battlefield Park. Each activity
or module contains instructions, objectives, correlations with
both National and Virginia Standards of Learning, background
information, lesson ideas and materials. While all of
the modules are designed as part of the "Baptism of Fire"
curriculum- based program, each can be used independently.
These materials are available below in .pdf format. Feel
free to print any of the materials for use in your classroom.
To request a copy of the video, Eyewitness To History,
for use as a pre-visit activity, please contact the Education
Specialist.
"Baptism
of Fire" utilizes activities in language arts, art, and of course,
history, to introduce students to the events and people
of the Civil War’s first major battle. The
goal of this program is to illustrate to students how the First Battle of
Manassas affected and changed the lives of all Americans, soldiers and
civilians alike and allow students to experience history where it
occurred.
"
Baptism of Fire" requires approximately
two hours at the battlefield and is offered weekdays by
reservation only. A typical program starts with a tour followed by a
Scavenger Hunt through the museum and closes with a review. Please
limit groups to 50 students with a minimum of
10 (with an adult-to-student ratio of at least 1 to 10).
The program is
free of charge to education groups (those with students over
age 17 may request an entrance
fee waiver).

Video "Eyewitness to History" (1
file)
pre-visit activity
To
obtain the video, e-mail the park Education
Specialist. Lesson ideas are contained in the file
below.
"A Call to Arms"
(3 files) pre-visit activities
Through
a specific study of the 27th Virginia Infantry, this lesson takes a
look at who joined the Union and Confederate armies and why. The
focus of this lesson is on the motives for enlistment, origins/backgrounds
of the soldiers and effects upon the community from which they came.
The
names from the 27th Virginia are designed to be
printed on Avery #5389 Laser Post Cards (4" x 6"). The
enlistment certificate is actually a copy of a standard Union enlistment
form.
"Rally ‘Round the Flag, Boys!"
(1 file) pre-visit activity
This lesson looks at the importance of flags to the Civil War armies
and the soldiers who served in the war.
"The War Goes On!"
(2 files) post-visit activities
This module,
designed to be used as a
post-visit
activity, is directly tied to "A
Call to Arms." Through a specific study of the 27th Virginia
Infantry, this lesson takes a look at the soldiers during and after
the war. This lesson also studies the effects of the war on the
communities from
which these men came.
The
names from the 27th Virginia are designed to be
printed on Avery #5389 Laser Post Cards (4" x 6").
Student
Activity Guide
The
student activity guide contains many of the activities found in the
"Baptism of Fire" modules. Download
the Student Activity Guide. If
using this activity guide independently
of "Baptism of Fire," consider the following:
1.
Do the activities related to flags. They
are simple, easy to use and apply to almost any perspective of the
Civil War.
2.
With a little bit of research, apply the
questions related to the 27th Virginia to most any other unit that
served in Northern Virginia during the war. Try to find a regiment
or company from your local area to place the Civil War into
context for your students. The National Park Service's Civil
War Soldiers and Sailors System allows you to search for
regiments by state.
3.
For the obituary lesson, pick a variety of
officers or enlisted men who were killed during the war and have the
students write an obituary for that particular individual.
