This work was initially sponsored by the National Park Service. LBJ National Historical Park superintendents Melody Webb, A.D. Jones, and Leslie Starr Hart extended their cooperation and support. Former Chief Historian, Ed Bearss deserves a special thank you. Ed graciously shared his own research on the park, providing insights from his long experience in the system. Park Historian John Tiff provided us with the benefit of his long experience at the park. Regional historians Neil Mangum and Art Gomez generously assisted in the day to day administration of the project and contributed greatly with their own observations on the work. The staff at the park and at the LBJ Library in Austin were remarkable in their willingness to guide us through the enormous volume of paper that held the keys to this story.
Dan Holder also deserves special acknowledgement. As the lead researcher on the project, he organized the information, kept track of countless oral history tapes and other sources, helped in the preparation of the outline, and copyedited and commented on the entire project. The assistance he provided helped make the project run smoothly.
As always, my family deserves more than the thanks I can possibly convey here. Their patience and willingness to tolerate my absences provide the time that allows me to undertake such projects. Words can not convey the depth of my gratitude.
