The Tsongas Industrial History Center, University of Massachusetts Lowell, Lowell National Historical Park and the Bartlett School of Lowell, Massachusetts "Save Our History" project has received national recognition from The History Channel. A team of two 8th grade students and two teachers have received an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC to compete with other Save Our History projects for a $10,000 national prize. In January, the History Channel and the American Association for State and Local History awarded the partnership an initial $10,000 "Save Our History" grant. in which Tsongas Center, Park, teachers and Bartlett 8th grade students would research, write and create a family activity guide to historic sites in the Acre neighborhood of Lowell. The project was one of only 19 funded out of nearly 600 proposals nationally. This was a "fast track" project because all funds needed to be expended by the end of June, so the project team had to work quickly. Sheila Kirschbaum, Sheli Turocy, and Amy Glowacki took the lead for the Tsongas Center and national park as part of the team to work with Bartlett school Principal Jackie Travers' team of instructional specialists, 8th grade teachers and about 20 8th graders. They interviewed people who grew up in the Acre and people from historical agencies, toured various historic sites, and selected eleven to create a prototype of a family activity guide. Mary Lou Hubbell of the University's Communications and Marketing Office worked with the students on the design. The project guide will be unveiled on May 19, 2005 at the Bartlett Middle School for invited guests. All 600 Save Our History grant applicants could apply for a trip to Washington to compete for a $10,000 national prize and other awards. Here, again, the Bartlett team of 2 students and 2 teachers was selected! They will now travel to Washington at the end of May to compete with other selected projects. .
