LOWELL SUMMER MUSIC SERIES ANNOUNCES 2005 FREE FUN FOR KIDS PERFORMANCE SERIES The Lowell Summer Music Series is excited to announce its 2005 Free Fun For Kids Performance Series. The Series consists of a dynamic and engaging line up which the whole family will enjoy. From Bald Eagles to Banjos, Music to Magic, and Safety to Silliness, the 2005 line up has something for everyone! Shows are presented free of charge on Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 11:00 a.m. outdoors at Boarding House Park at Lowell National Historical Park: Wednesday, July 6 – Mifflin Lowe Author, singer and musician, Mifflin Lowe has delighted kids from New Orleans to New England with his stories, poems and songs. His lively performance will include selections from his CD’s ‘Beasts by the Bunches’, and ‘The King Who Forgot his Underpants’. Come enjoy this wonderful mix of silliness and insight! Thursday, July 7 – Andy Holiner and Alice Johnson Andy Holiner and Alice Johnson celebrate diversity by leading the audience through a musical journey to many of the cultures that have made America so wonderfully diverse! This program will include African, Caribbean, Irish, Native American, and African American music. Andy and Alice will bring song, dance, folklore, and stories that ensure an interactive fun time for all, while learning about respecting, appreciating, and celebrating cultural diversity. Wednesday, July 13 – Massachusetts Birds Of Prey From the earliest times, Birds Of Prey have occupied a special place in our feelings towards the natural world, symbolizing freedom, power, and nobility. Come see and learn about raptors, the type of birds that prey on other animals to survive. Experience a close up view of rare species like the American Bald Eagle as well as hawks, falcons, owls, and vultures. All ages will enjoy this educational and fun presentation! Thursday, July 14 – Wayne Potash and The Music Fun Band Singer / songwriter Wayne Potash has performed sensational participation style family shows throughout Massachusetts and New England. A graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Wayne’s third album, “Yodel For A Fish” is featured on children’s radio programs across the country. Wayne leads the fabulous ‘Music Fun Band’, an acoustic quartet that will be fully enjoyed by the young and old alike. Come on down and participate in this wonderful toe tappin’, body movin’ sing along! Wednesday, July 20 – Bonaparte, Boston’s Hottest Magician! John Hurst Bonaparte has been performing live magic for more than two decades throughout the nation! Bonaparte weaves wonderful magic, and as he does, he stealthily passes on positive life messages to young and old a like. Come experience the sizzling magical entertainment of Bonaparte, which always features audience participation for all ages. You will leave the show dazzled and amazed! Thursday, July 21 – Elizabeth Mitchell A founding member of the New York City home-spun indie-folk band ‘Ida’, Elizabeth Mitchell is also a former nursery school teacher, and now a mother. Her three studio recordings celebrate the special relationship that only parents and their children share. Her soft and soothing voice and folky guitar style will be a big hit with children and their parents alike. Her recordings have received top accolades such as “Children’s Record Of The Year” from the Boston Phoenix for her very first children’s cd “You Are My Flower”. Don’t miss national touring and recording artist Elizabeth Mitchell, who will perform with her band mate and husband Daniel Littleton in this rare north east appearance! Wednesday, August 3 – L’il Iguana Safety Show The L’il Iguana’s Children Safety Foundation brings safety and well being lessons to communities and educational institutions through music and dance. This fun and engaging safety show teaches children that “A Safe and Happy Childhood Lasts A Lifetime.” Come take part in this fun participatory program and discover why the Massachusetts Safety Officers League, the Massachusetts Highway Safety Bureau and numerous child care providers have all adopted Lil’ Iguana as their official “safety mascot”! Thursday, August 4 – Angkor Dance Troupe History and culture come alive through modern interpretations of lively folk dance from rural Cambodia and dazzling renditions of classical court dance, an ancient Cambodian tradition dating to the ninth century A.D. Based in Lowell, the Angkor Dance Troupe was formed in 1986 by Cambodian Refugees fleeing the Khmer Rouge government. The troupe is recognized throughout New England as a leading Cambodian traditional arts ensemble. The organization comprises of several master teachers and more than sixty students. Wednesday, August 10 – Ben Rudnick and Friends Sophisticated melodies, precise instrumentation and witty lyrics that will delight the whole family, is what you’ll discover from the award winning five piece Ben Rudnick and Friends acoustic band. Described as a Jerry Garcia like jam band for families, the quintet consists of guitar, mandolin, accordion, drums and bass. The group’s latest cd recording ‘Blast Off’ has received both a Parent’s Choice Award and a National Parenting Publication Award. Don’t miss Ben Rudnick and Friends triumphant return to the Free Fun For Kid’s series at Boardinghouse Park. Thursday August 11 – Double Vision – Season Finale! Double Vision is a spectacular duet of high energy entertainment! If you took expert juggling, synchronized pratfalls, slow motion mime, robotics, umbrellas, a vacuum, step ladders, a tight rope, a giant cube, a guitar, an accordion, a trumpet, cigar boxes, a kite tail, a parasol, gibberish, a peacock feather, the jitterbug, assorted derbies and illusion, and put them all together with decades of experience, you’ll get Double Vision! Hold on for the ride! An exceptional and exciting show for the whole family. The Lowell Summer Music Series is presented by the Lowell National Historical Park, the Lowell Festival Foundation and the University of Massachusetts Lowell. Easy to find, Lowell is located 28 miles north of Boston off Interstates 93 and 495 and Route 3. Boarding House Park is located on the corner of French Street and John Street in downtown Lowell. In the event of rain, performances move to the newly renovated Lowell High School auditorium, across the street from Boarding House Park.
