The
Mogan Center is a program of Lowell National Historic Park, in partnership
with the University
of Massachusetts Lowell. The University acts as Lowell National
Historical Park's key partner in the Mogan Center through its operation
of the Center for Lowell History, as well as other educational activities,
including Learning in Retirement Association classes. University
representatives serve on the nine-member community committee which
proposes and reviews Mogan Center programs. The Center
for Lowell History maintains the holdings of several important
archival collections including the Lowell Historical Society, the
Boston and Maine Railroad Historical Society and the University
of Massachusetts Lowell.
The
Angkor
Dance Troupe was founded in 1986 by Cambodian refugee Tim Chan
Thou, who had escaped the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime of the 1970s.
He and others fled because traditional artists and dancers were
specifically marked for death by the Khmer Rouge, which succeeded
in killing over 90 per cent of Cambodia's cultural leaders. Those
who founded the troupe felt strongly the need to preserve their
cultural traditions. More than 500 young people have learned to
continue their cultural heritage through dance since the Troupe's
founding. In September 2001, the Dance Troupe entered a new chapter
in its life by moving to the Mogan Center where it has rehearsal
and office space on the third floor.
