Lowell National Historical Park
A Brief Visit

"Human Construction"

Modern granite sculpture plopped in the middle of the canal - looking for all the world like an industrial "ruin".

The "Industrial Canyon" is a section of the Pawtucket Canal lined on both sides by large manufacturing companies. The canals brought water to the mills where it dropped through water wheels or turbines located in the basements. In the foreground is part of the city's public art collection. Created in 1989 by Carlos Dorrien, "Human Construction" provides a gateway to Lowell and symbolizes the human qualities of city building -- creativity, strength and durability.
