Guard Locks on the Pawtucket Canal

Guard Locks on the Pawtucket Canal

Guard Locks on the Pawtucket Canal is the entryway to the canal system and contains both a lock chamber for transportation, and sluice gates for water power. This site is probably best know for the "Great Gate", seen here on the left, a 21 ton wooden gate completed in 1850. This gate was used in 1852 and 1936 to save the city from devastating floods.
