Kayaking and Canoeing in Little River Canyon National Preserve

Kayaking and Canoeing are popular water sports on Little River during the winter months. In the summer the water is usually too low for the river to be navigable. On a scale from 1 to 6 of difficulty in kayaking or canoeing, Little River is a 3+ to a 6. It is not recommended that anyone but experienced kayakers and canoers  navigate Little River. The river has many hair pin curves, drop offs and dangerous hydraulics that can cost people their lives if they do not know how to maneuver through the worst areas.

To determine the water level you can call 1-800-525-3711 and follow directions. Little River is in the Coosa River Basin. Little River is runable if between 400cfs -1500 cfs. There is a web site available that shows where to put in and what kayakers will encounter on the river all the way to the pull out. http://members.aol.com/gratefuled/little/little.htm

Little River Canyon National Preserve does not rent kayaks or canoes, nor do we do raft rides. We do not have a shuttle bus or any other transportation to take to from one point to another. It's better to have a partner and park a car at each end. Anyone who kayaks, canoes or rafts Little River does so at their own risk.

We have a new trail that leads down Eberhart Point that will make it much easier for kayakers taking their equipment down the canyon to put in. If you have more questions please call (256)845-9605 or email us
