Bullrush Mat NPS Photograph Equivalent to today’s couch or chair, nearly every family had at least one bullrush mat around the fire pit to sit upon. The size was fairly standard at 3 feet wide by 7 feet long. A family was considered poor if they did not have a bullrush mat. It was considered improper to sit on a buffalo hide.
