Hoop and Stick Game
NPS Photograph The hoop was made of willow bound with sinew and laced with rawhide, about 12 inches in diameter. The stick was a forked willow branch. In the spring of the year it was the favorite game of young boys. If 2 or 3 boys were playing on a side they would use 3 or 4 hoops. One side would throw a hoop and the other side tried to catch it on the forked end of the stick. If all the hoops were caught, the catchers would give chase to the throwers and try to tag them as they ran. If a hoop was missed the catchers surrendered that hoop and one other. If the throwers now possessed all hoops they would then give chase. If not, the set would start over. |
