KINGS MOUNTAIN BATTLEFIELD TRAIL AWARD

The Kings Mountain Battlefield Trail Award has been developed for organized hikers, especially youth groups such as Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, to provide them an interesting and enjoyable outdoor experience and the opportunity to learn more about the history of our nation.

The award consists of a four color (red, white, blue and brown) patch 3" x 4 1/4". It may be worn on your hiking clothes or jackets and may be worn on the center of the right shirt pocket on either a Boy Scout or Cub Scout shirt.

Requirements:
1) Camp overnight at Kings Mountain State Park
2) Hike the Clarks Creek Trail from the State Park Campground to the National Park Visitor Center (2.8 miles)
3) View the 30 minute film at the Visitor Center on the Battle of Kings Mountain
4) Receive trail questionnaire from Visitor Center staff. Take the 1.5 mile hike around the battlefield and read the historical markers. Start the hike at the Visitor Center.
5) Answer the questions on the trail questionnaire while touring the trail. After completion, the Park Ranger on duty must stamp your questionnaire. Stamped questionnaires must accompany patch application.
6) Obtain stamp from State Park verifying overnight stay.

Ordering Patches
After the group has met the above requirements, the leader should complete the application and enclose a check payable to the Palmetto Council (Mail to Palmetto Council, Box 6249, 420 S. Church St., Spartanburg, SC 29304.

Patches cost $2.50 each.

PARK REGULATIONS
Unit leaders are requested to read the following regulations to each group before the hike:
1) All hikers will be expected to abide by the rules of the National Park Service, and the South Carolina State Parks. Please do not take short cuts on the trail, since this causes erosion and tends to mislead other hikers. Conduct at all times should be a credit to Scouting and all hikers must practice the Scout Oath and Law.
2) Safety should be considered at all times. Be especially careful crossing roads.
3) Please leave trees, shrubs, flowers, birds, animals, signs and park structures undisturbed for others to enjoy. Firearms are prohibited. Fires are prohibited except in designated fireplaces in the campground and picnic area at the State Park.
4) All trash must be deposited in containers provided for this purpose. Help keep your parks clean by making certain no litter is left along the trail.
5) All hikers must complete the entire trail and visit all exhibits to qualify for the award.

Rangers will refuse to stamp questionnaires of any person or groups known to have violated the above rules.
