| They had some many things in their house like a stove, a highchair,
dishes, and a table. They had an outside refrigerator. It is called an evaporative
cooler and works like a swamp cooler. The children would fill the top with water
and the burlap absorbed the water. The burlap covers the whole cooler. This kept
the food cool. Click here to see a picture of the house. |

| The washing of clothes was a long process. The Keys did the wash
once every two weeks. They always did the wash on Wednesday. The wash took all
day. They did not change the water until after they were done. They washed the
light clothes first then they washed the dark clothes last. After the Keys were
done with the water they poured it on the plants in the garden. Click here to see a picture of the washing machine. |

Canning food was a summertime chore. Vegetables and fruits from the orchard
had to be picked, peeled, cut-up and packed in glass jars. The jars were
heated in boiling water for 4 hours. Mrs. Keys sold extra food from a
small store next to the house. She only opened the store when customers
came to the ranch. Whenever people came to the store they could buy canned
food, odds and ends, and other things that the Keys had collected. People
did not come every day because it was to far and because the only close
town was 60 miles away. Sometimes they came to visit the Keys family. |
