Introduction:

In this section will be found short descriptions of the major Euro-American explorers and explorations conducted in North America and what is today the continental United States between 1492 and 1900. These explorations put the Lewis and Clark Expedition into a broader context. The explorations discussed for the years 1700-1900 are primarily land-based and do not consider the major accomplishments of Capt. James Cook, George Vancouver, Charles Wilkes and other major sea-borne expeditions, or the opening of the South Pacific to Euro-American science.
