[Block 82B]

Pierre Montardy, a native of Montauban, France, came to St. Louis from Fort de Chartres and built this French style house on the southeast corner of this block in 1766. The house was later occupied by a baker named Barrere, and Third Street was at one time known to some by this man's name, Rue Barrere. In 1804 the house was owned by Manuel Lisa. After the transfer of Upper Louisiana the Spanish garrison of the fort was quartered here, waiting several months for the boat which would take them downriver to New Orleans.
