[Block 60A]

Eugenio Alvarez, who was born in Madrid, Spain about 1736, owned the west side of the block. Alvarez was one of the Spanish soldiers who were stationed in St. Louis in 1770 when the first Spanish lieutenant governor arrived. In 1782 he married Josepha Crepeau, and the couple had two sons and one daughter. Alvarez worked as the King's military storekeeper at the fort. This house measured 25 x 35 feet and was posts on a sill in its construction. There was also a large barn on the property. Alvarez died in June 1816.

This view of the Old Courthouse was taken looking westward from the site of the Alvarez House at Third (Memorial Drive) and Market Streets. The Old Courthouse was built between 1839 and 1862, and is a part of Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. It replaced an earlier court building built between 1826 and 1828. In 1804 the site was undeveloped land to the north of the fort.
