Title Graphic depicting Vinn Diagram featuring I. Images of the West
INTRODUCTION TO "IMAGES OF THE WEST
BEFORE LEWIS AND CLARK"

Summary: Many people tried to imagine what the West was like before Lewis and Clark made their epic journey--just as people today try to imagine the features of a distant planet or the depths of the oceans. Some of the theories circulating in the eastern United States had some logic to them, while others were pure fantasy.

In this lesson, students are familiarized with the prevailing images of the West and how the Lewis and Clark expedition discredited many of those images. Exercises contrasting speculation and logical thinking are included.
