[Block 32A]

This large stone house was built by stone mason Jean Marie Pepin (see Block 8) in the early days of the town. He sold it to Charles Gratiot in 1796, when it was described as having "seven rooms not counting the basements, [and] a stone kitchen building with a court and garden." The house measured 52 x 36 feet, the kitchen 20 x 25 feet. Gratiot added a store on the property in 1797. Gratiot was married to one of the three daughters of Madame Chouteau, all of whom lived in homes clustered on this block and across the street.

This modern view, looking eastward, shows the site of the Gratiot House and its proximity to the north leg of the Gateway Arch.
