INTRODUCTION TO
LITTLE "POMP" GROWING UP ON THE TRAIL
Summary
LESSON PLAN 2: GROWING UP ON THE TRAIL
Summary: Jean Baptiste was the infant son of Sacagawea and Toussaint
Charbonneau. He was only eight weeks old when his parents joined
the Lewis and Clark expedition in North Dakota. When they returned
from the expedition, he was two years old, so he literally grew
up on the trail. When he became an adult, he had many adventures
both in America and Europe. During this lesson, students compare
the lives of Indian children long ago with their own lives today.

A Word For Teachers about Using this Cirriculum Guide
Lesson plans and activities in this curriculum guide have been planned
to accommodate a wide range of student interests and capabilities
rather than imposing a rigid age/grade structure upon the materials.
We encourage teachers to adapt the materials according to the needs,
interests, and capabilities of their classes. Even the diagram below
should be taken as an approximation. After all, no one knows your
students better than you do.
