Explorers Before Lewis and Clark
Hayes, Derek. First Crossing: Alexander MacKenzie, His Expedition
Across North America, and the Opening of the Continent. Seattle,
WA: Sasquatch Books, 2001. This is the story of a Scottish fur trader
and adventurer who explored the Canadian Northwest several years
before the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
Cross, Francis E. Sea Venture: Captain Gray's Voyages of Discovery,
1787-1793. Gray was an America sea captain who discovered the
mouth of the Columbia River in 1792. His accomplishment gave the
United States a strong claim to the Oregon Territory whose ownership
was disputed at the time.

video by renowned director, Ken Burns, is highly acclaimed. Dayton
Duncan wrote the script that is narrated by Hal Holbrook and Adam
Arkin. Playing time is 240 minutes.

volume to Ken Burns' documentary film about the Lewis and Clark
Expedition. It is filled with photographs, paintings, drawings,
charts, maps, and much more. Teachers will find many stories and
illustrations to enhance the lessons in this unit.
