INTRODUCTION TO "LEWIS AND CLARK ENCOUNTER
GRIZZLY BEARS"

Summary:

One of the tasks given to Lewis and Clark by President Jefferson was to take special note of animals that were not present in the eastern part of the country. Probably the most awesome of all the "new" animals encountered on the expedition were grizzly bears. Many passages in the journals describe these awesome animals and tell of close encounters with them. The dwindling number of grizzly bears today compared to the time of Lewis and Clark provides an opportunity to discuss threatened and endangered species.
