[Block 41D]
Flora, a "free mulattress," lived here in
a poteaux en terre (posts in earth) vertical log house built in
1766 and measuring 12 x 15 feet. According to a 1799 Spanish census
there were 50 free mulattos who lived in St. Louis.
The
site of Flora's house is on the left of this modern scene, which
looks eastward toward the Mississippi River from the corner of Second
and Cedar streets. The property to the right, now occupied by the
buildings of the Crunden-Martin Manufacturing Company, would have
been vacant land owned by Gabriel Cerre in 1804.
