St. Louis: The Town as Seen by Lewis
and Clark
The St. Louis seen by Lewis and Clark in
1803 and 1804 was very different from the city that later grew on
the same spot. In 1804, there were only about 200 buildings, inhabited
by less than 1000 people. The common language was French, although
Spanish, English and Indian languages such as Osage and Illini were
also commonly spoken.
