| P.S.
As the expedition wore on I became a more-or-less equal member
of the Corps, carrying a rifle, participating in all the excitement
and hardships of the journey. I asked my master for my freedom
after the expedition ended, but he would not grant it. In fact,
it wasn't until 1816 that I was allowed to join my wife and
family and begin my own business as a free man. I died sometime
before 1832 after the failure of my business; I was enroute
to rejoin my old master, William Clark. |
